Wereldwijd Uitgestorven: Wormen
De term worm wordt momenteel gebruikt om veel verschillende ver verwante dieren met een lang cylindrisch lichaam zonder poten te beschrijven, zoals de ringwormen, platwormen, rondwormen, fluweelwormen, etc. De IUCN Rode Lijst in de Bedreigde Dieren (Versie 2011.1) bevat 2 recent uitgestorven wormen (IUCN 2011). | The Giant Brazilian Earthworm (Rhinodrilus fafner) is an extinct giant earthworm from the family Glossoscolecidae. It is only known by the ill-preserved holotype discovered and described in 1918 by German zoologist Wilhelm Michaelsen from the National History Museum in Hamburg. It was found near Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The collected individual has a length of 210 centimetre and the body which consists of 600 single segments is 24 millimetre in diameter. Besides the Giant Gippsland Earthworm (Megascolides australis) from Australia, the Giant Brazilian Earthworm is among the largest known giant earthworms. The Giant Brazilian Earthwormwas confined to a small habitat and vanished possibly due to habitat destruction.
